Cape Horn and climbing out on the Yard Arm!

Saturday, December 26, 2015
We finished watch at midnight and got to sleep in a rocky boat all night.  Amazing how a body can get used to that!

Dolphins!
Went out for watch at 8am.  Beautiful passage through the islands to get to Cape Horn.  We saw dolphins right at the start of our watch.  They swim and play off the bow of the boat.  Got a couple of decent photos.

Lowering the Zodiac into the sea.

Bosun Emma in her dry suit!

Crew in dry suits ready to get the zodiac to shore.

The family home and chapel.

We arrived at Cape Horn with pretty calm conditions so the zodiacs were launched and carried us to land.  There is a family that lives on this remote location for one year at a time.  It is pretty desolate but there is certainly its own beauty as well.

Some very hardy flowers!

The Albatross Memorial.

Outdoor picnic at Cape Horn.

We hiked the stairs up to the top and went to the lighthouse and little chapel and to the Albatross Memorial.  We even ate our sack lunches up on top of the hill.  It was really nice!

Climbing up to help unfurl the sails.

The zodiacs took us back to the Europa and we prepared to launch.  I got to climb the foremast and out on the yard arm of the lower topsail.  I did it, but I was pretty terrified… but I did it!!  Thank you, Heidi, for taking photos to prove it!

Up and over the little platform.

Continuing up!

Standing on the cable and untying the lines holding the sails.

Off to get ready for watch at 4pm.  Later!
